The magic system in Oblivion is much more robust and versatile spell-wise than the one featured in Skyrim. Oblivion offers you more spells to learn and even the option to make your own spells to cast. Mages definitely have a lot to choose from and it can be overwhelming at first to figure out where to begin.

Dungeon crawling can be a dangerous and deadly business, so being able to see your opponents well in advance is certain to give you an advantage. The Detect Life Spell works for 60 seconds outlining all visible and invisible creatures and people around you.
You’ll want to level this spell up since the higher magnitude version not only increases the spell’s range, but it makes it easier to distinguish between animals and people.
If Mysticism is one of your major skills, you will begin the game with minor detect life.

In its minor form, this spell serves as a good replacement for ranged attacks if you don’t have the magika levels to cast fireballs. It gets the job done quickly by immediately draining health.
The Minor Wound spell is available for sale from Druja, a Battlemage at the Skingrad Mages Guild.
Mages can be annoying to deal with. So, if you take their only means of attack away from them you can deal with them much faster. Drain Magicka works by draining anywhere from 30-200 points of Magicka from a person on touch.
Any mage should have this spell handy when going up against other magic users since these fights tend to be evenly matched. As a lot of Mythic Dawn members seem fond of spells, this can help you on the main quest.
To purchase this spell you must visit Sulinus Vassinus at the Skingrad Mages Guild.
You can cast fire, shock, and frost damage all at the same time using this spell and the best part is that you don’t even have to pay to learn it. This powerful destruction spell lets you deal a whole lot of damage at once, which outweighs the Magicka cost.
Since three different types of damage are dealt with at once, opponents who might be resistant to one will still take damage with the other two. A great spell for any occasion.
As a mage-type character, you are probably well aware of the struggle in improving skills in other non-magic areas. Lockpicking is one of those skills that can cost you gold if you don’t invest. Thankfully magic is always there to help.

Wandering the wilderness of Cyrodiil makes you very vulnerable to lots of diseases. Carrying potions or continuously praying at shrines for the Divine can be a constant annoyance. But, once this spell is learned all that goes away.
Cure disease does exactly what it claims to do, cures any disease you have once cast. Great for long bouts of exploring without going to a town or going up against vampires and don’t want to turn into one yourself.
To cast this spell, you will need to be a Journeyman in the Restoration skill. The spell is available for sale from Arvus Adas, a priest at the Great Chapel of Zenithar in Leyawiin.
Willpower is essential for mages and having it drained can greatly impact your ability to fight.
Restore Willpower allows you to undo the damage caused by drain spells and restore your attribute by five points.
You will need this spell if you use magic the most since any damage to your willpower attribute will significantly weaken you. It's a spell you won’t use a lot, but you will be glad to have it when you need it.
Visit the Great Chapel of Julianos in Skingrad and talk to Tumindil to purchase Restore Willpower.
Unless you are an Argonian, this spell is needed to truly experience all of Oblivion. Without it, there are many underwater treasures you are missing out on.

If you want to get underwater and not just float make sure you learn the spell Water Breathing and not Buoyancy. Buoyancy does allow you to breathe water, but it makes you float rendering underwater exploration impossible.
The Water Breathing spell can be cast by those who have reached apprentice level in alteration. You can buy the spell at Edgar’s Discount Spells in the Imperial City.
Particularly useful against staff wielders this spell disintegrates a weapon by 150 points on touch which will render a lot of weapons totally useless or weaken them significantly.
An opponent without a reliable weapon is easier to kill and staves are usually only 100 points in health which allows you to render them completely useless. You will want this spell to help your chances of winning against any sort of weapon.
You have to be a master in destruction magic before you can cast this spell. Gaspard Stegine, who can be found in the Arcane University, has Disintegrate Weapon for sale.
There’s nothing better than rendering your opponent motionless for any amount of time in the middle of a fight. Especially when there are multiple enemies and you can’t focus on all of them at once.
Paralyze spells range from paralyzing someone anywhere from three to ten seconds on touch. Once immobile, even the fiercest foe is much easier to defeat than before.
A Journeyman in Illusion Magic can purchase the lowest level of paralyzing, called debilitate, from Ita Rienus at the Bravil Mages Guild.
