I have a Champion and have been unable to find help with a letter in the serial number. TBIX is the number but I"m having a problem with the X. Not really concerned with a value but would love to know the time period it was made.

Inherited grandfather"s Champion Iver Johnson ? Works 12 Gage full choke barrel and lug forged in one serial number CCRI. Would like to know manufacturing year

I have been given an old IJ shotgun, single 12 ga. Has 2 patent numbers on barrel with champion in the middle. I was told first champion was made in 1909. However I can find no info on a serial number. There is no numbers on the stocks on receiver tangs, trigger etc. It"s a side step and only numbers I found are as listed. On the latching Tang on bottom of barrel it appears to say 1889. It has been welded, repaired here so not sure of last 2 numbers.Only other numbers are on the forearm lock Tang. On one side it has a 3 and on other side has 968.Nothing else anywhere on gun. I understood serial number would probably be letters. Trying to identify original ammo used. 2 3/4 shells fit fine but I"m thinking should be 2 1/2 inch black powder. Thanks

Jmustiansr: You have been misinformed. The Champion name was first used by Johnson & Bye, a partnership of Iver Johnson and Martin Bye in the period 1880-1882 when the partnership ended and the company became Iver Johnson and Company. The company became Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works in 1894.

You have a Champion Side Snap Hammer shotgun with an imported Twist Steel barrel Made in the period 1880-1900.

There was also a Champion Top Snap and Champion Side Snap Hammerless made in the 1880-1900 period.

This shotgun was chambered for Black Powder shells and due to the Twist Steel barrel and the welding on the broken lug, is not safe to use with any ammunition.

The patent date is the issue date for patent number 230,409 issued July 27, 1880 to C.H. Eutebrouk for a single barrel/center mounted hammer.

For what it is worth, Iver Johnson used a single letter suffix on serial numbers in the period 1917-1921, a two letter suffix 1921-1939 and serial numbers with only letters 1939-1957.

Jmustiansr: It is interesting that both patents posted refer to revolvers and not shotguns.

Patent number 257,085 issued July 20, 1886 to I. Johnson and A. Fryerg for an ejector for a top break revolver and patent number 362,631 for an ejector for a top break revolver and patent number 362,632 for an ejector and others for a top break revolver both issued to I. Johnson and A. Fryberg May 10, 1887.

That"s wild haha. No wonder I was having trouble identifying it. I"ll look real hard again at the patents and make sure. They, like the word Champion appear very worn. The barrel also does not have the appearance of being twisted steel. I thought twisted would show signs like small ribs as I"ve seen on some other guns. This barrel is pretty smooth.
